Promote Deeper Learning with DOK is an all-day virtual session facilitated by Dr. Karin Hess. This session is designed for teacher teams K-5 and 6-12. Teams who registered will be facilitated virtually by a HSTW/MMGW Coach.
K-5 Teams will begin in a morning session with Karin, then work independently with a HSTW/MMGW Coach facilitator on an assignment (i.e. lessons/unit plan, formative assessments), and reconnect with Dr. Hess during an afternoon session to use PLC tool 10 with strategies to guide development and refinements of their formative assessments.
6-12 Teams will begin the day working independently with a HSTW/MMGW Coach facilitator on an assignment (i.e. lessons/unit plan, formative assessments), and later in the morning meet with Dr. Hess. During the afternoon session, the teams will meet with Dr. Hess using PLC tool 10 with strategies to guide development and refinements of formative assessments.
This series was a special request by Mapleton Local Schools and open to all HSTW/MMGW site teams and invited guests.
Morning Session: Are your students thinking deeply or just working harder? Infusing DOK into Instruction & Assessment (based on Module 1 of the Assessment Toolkit book). In this session, participants will begin by developing a shared understanding of DOK/rigor and dispel several common misconceptions about what increased rigor actually looks like. Participants will examine a range of grade-specific instructional and assessment examples.
Afternoon Session: Promoting deeper learning with high-quality formative assessment (based on Module 3 of the Assessment Toolkit)
Teachers use formative assessments every day, many of which only check for recall of surface level information. High quality-formative assessments go beyond surface level understanding to demonstrate conceptual understanding (DOK 2), and strategic thinking and reasoning (DOK 3-4). Karin will introduce her PLC tool 10 with strategies to guide development and refinements of formative assessments. Then we’ll use Tools 25 and 26 in lesson and unit planning activities, identifying unit learning targets along a “defensible” learning progression. Teachers must bring sample assessments or assignments from a unit of study they plan to teach.
