Literacy Design Collaborative

The Literacy Design Collaborative (LDC) is an approach for incorporating rigorous literacy standards into middle grade and high school content areas.  LDC features proven tools and strategies for implementing the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and other rigorous standards of instruction.  It involves teachers, district, and state leadership teams interested in learning how to advance students’ grade-level mastery of literacy skills (reading, writing, thinking).

The basic building block of LDC is a 2-4 week instructional module composed of a teaching task, standards, mini-tasks, and various other instructional elements. Using the LDC framework and tools, teachers develop a literacy-rich task  and design instruction to help students complete that task. A jurying process is in place that allows teachers to improve and share exemplary modules.

The LDC instructional framework is based on four guiding questions:

  • What task?
  • What skills?
  • What instruction?
  • What results?

This framework is creating a shift in teaching and learning that can help students take ownership of assignments and perform at higher levels.  Ohio has begun comprehensive state-wide LDC training for HSTW/MMGW sites during the FY13-14 school year.
